Small Classes and Caring Teachers

St Matthew’s Collegiate School welcomes international girls from Year 7 through to Year 13. It is a small school where every girl is important. Our roll of around 300 makes it easy for our teachers, matrons and support staff get to know all students well and take a personal interest in their learning and general wellbeing. We offer a safe environment where young women can study in small classes and be assisted to develop their sporting skills and cultural talents.

A Mix of Girls-Only and Co-Education

From Years 7 to 11, classes are held at the beautiful St Matthew’s campus in Masterton and are just for girls. In Years 12 and 13, girls take a pleasant, 10-minute bus ride each morning and arrive at the magnificent grounds of Senior College. They share classes with boys from our brother school, Rathkeale, returning to St Matthew’s and Hampton House at the end of the day.

A Safe and Beautiful Environment for International Boarders

In the boarding houses, our international students live together with local girls under the care of the Dean of Boarding, Mrs Karen Lapslie, and her team of caring matrons.
For the younger girls in Main House, accommodation is in comfortable cubicles or shared rooms. For the older girls there are single rooms. There is supervised study each evening.
In Hampton House, senior girls each have a spacious, private room with a desk. All meals are provided, but they can make snacks and hot drinks in the well-equipped kitchens whenever they like.
Both boarding houses have cosy lounges where students can relax and chat together.

Mixing with the Locals

Each term there are two or three exeat weekends, where all students leave the boarding houses. International students go to carefully selected host families or take advantage of invitations from their school friends for a taste of real New Zealand life. Students who do not return to their homeland for school holidays are placed with homestay families or may choose to go to an English language school for a short course. Older students may like to go on one of the trips around New Zealand organized for overseas students by reputable companies.
