By the Trust Deed of 1921 the Board
established St Matthew's as an Anglican
school. The connection with the Anglican Church is the basis of the special
character described in the Integration Agreement.
Religious Education is a core curriculum subject. It provides a context where students may gain an understanding of the place of religion in society and an awareness of common human experience as experienced through religion. The upholding of a strong moral code based on Christian standards and values is an essential element of the school's character.
Each student is required to be involved in school worship which provides the opportunity for her to develop her own spirituality and grow in awareness of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Along with the planning of regular weekly worship for both daygirls and boarders, the School Chaplain, the Rev. Lesley Mouat, creates opportunities for Christian nurture and growth through Baptism, Admission to Communion and Confirmation. She also exercises a pastoral ministry with students and staff. Services for daygirls and boarders are held during the week and on Sunday, by the School Chaplain and visiting preachers. Boarders from both Rathkeale and St Matthew's regularly hold combined services. The school chapel was given to St Matthew's by its Old Girls in 1986. Pews donated bear the names of families of girls educated at St Matthew's over the nearly 90 years of its history. A number of striking new stained glass windows, designed by artist Heather Busch are being added by present and past pupils.
