St Matthew's Collegiate - Sports
Participation and achievement in sport and fitness are a major part of school life at St Matthew's.
Through sport and physical education programmes, all girls learn about lifelong participation and the value of physical activity. Fitness, making new friends, teamwork, communication and working with others are a way of life.
Each girl enjoys the fun and inclusive atmosphere of her house family which competes in sporting and cultural competitions. Involvement and participation in sport is strongly encouraged, alongside excellence and success on the local, regional and national stages.
All girls play a winter sport. Summer sport is optional. A wide variety of sports are offered and where they are not, we create new opportunities to meet the needs and interests of students.
Our full-time sports coordinator and support staff spend time with each girl to understand her interests and enable her to achieve her potential. A magnificent gymnasium, a large all-weather AstroTurf area and solar-heated swimming and diving pools provide excellent facilities for competitive and recreational water sports.
A fitness programme is offered for girls who want to train for the top sports teams. Performance and improvement are monitored on a weekly basis.
The summer and winter Quad Tournaments between St Matthew’s, Iona, Woodford and Nga Tawa Colleges are highlights of the annual sporting calendar. Intermediate teams also compete in annual fixtures.
Leadership opportunities for students to share their passion for sport include assisting with organisation of the school sports programme, heading sports and houses, and coaching and umpiring younger girls.
For more information on individual sports, go to our Summer / Winter Sports Booklet 2013.
